Self catering accommodation in Galicia, Northern Spain

Self catering galicia

Granero del Burro is a self catering barn conversion in Galicia, Northern Spain. It is located 5 minutes away from the quiet village of Trabada on the border between Galicia and Asturias. The popular coastal town of Ribadeo is just 20 minutes away and the beautiful Barreiros beaches are 20km away. The famous Las Catedrales beach is just half an hour away and the impressive Santiago de Compostela (where the Pilgrim's Way ends) is just under 2 hours away. Click here for a map of the area

The barn sleeps up to four people in 2 ensuite bedrooms. The upstairs bedroom has a king sized bed, and the downstairs bedroom has 2 large single beds. Both ensuite bathrooms have power drench showers.

The lounge is upstairs and has wonderful views across the valley to the local church. Downstairs there is a modern open plan kitchen with dining area, as well as a snug area to sit, a utility area and a separate  toilet. Outside there are 8000 square metres of land to wander and sit in. There is a restored bread oven which is a fantastic area to sit and eat, as well as a stone barbecue that provides the outdoor cooking facility. There is an impressive grain store built in 1891! The barn has lots of nice add-ons to make it a great place to stay all year round. There is underfloor heating and a wood burning stove to keep you warm in the Winter and cooler months. There is both English and Spanish television and radio with a full FreeSat package available. The 42'' high definition TV has a sound bar for high quality sound and there is a Blu Ray disc player with a selection of Blu Ray DVD's to watch. There is a free standing iPod/iPhone docking station where you can play your own music and fill the barn with wonderful sounds. You can also play your own CD's on the Blu Ray player. There is wi-fi and an excellent 4G signal for those of you that can't leave your work at home.

Galicia is very easy to get to by both air and car. Santiago de Compostela airport is under 2 hours away and Ryanair fly there from Stansted. Santander ferry port is just over 3 hours drive away (Brittany Ferries from Plymouth, Portsmouth or Cork). Driving in Northern Spain is very easy with the A8 motorway across the North of Spain complete. The roads are very quiet.

Galicia is a lesser known part of Spain and is part of the Costa Verde (Green coast). It is different from the rest of Spain in that it is very green, has cooler Summers (around 25 degrees) and has very little recognised international tourism. It is where the Spanish go on holiday. Las Catedrales beach

The surrounding area is fantastic for food, beaches, sightseeing, architecture, walking, birdwatching and of course, the fiestas! There is something to do at all times of the year and in all types of weather. The food in particular is very special with fantastic fish and shellfish as well as great grilled meats and local specialities. You can cook your own grilled food on the barbecue outside.

Granero del Burro is just a great place to chill out, relax and enjoy a quiet corner of Northern Spain. We welcome children over the age of 12 but do not allow pets. Our downstairs bedroom is accessible for people with reduced mobility.

The front door is in!!!

Finally the front door has been installed at Granero del Burro. It resembles something you are more likely to find attached to the front of a church but it will serve a purpose!! It even has a huge key!! The internal doors will be in the same style, hopefully giving the barn a nice rustic feel.

Satellite dish

Jodrell Bank has also been installed. For all those who need their fix of the BBC or ITV, there is now a 2.4 metre satellite dish to beam this in to the barn. There will of course be Spanish TV available as well. The dish has been hidden in a well in the ground so as not to spoil the local countryside!!

Bread oven

Outside the work on the Bread Oven is progressing nicely. This will be a fantastic outside space where you can eat and drink. there will be a terrace in front of it and a barbecue as well. It will be lit so it will be a nice space at night too. Are you tempted to book yet!!? Remember there is a special offer at the moment. Click here to read about it.

Granero del Burro update - July 2012

The kitchen and stairs have now been installed in Granero del Burro. The kitchen is very modern and comes from a company called The Singular Kitchen in A Coruña. It has a special surface called Techlan which is extremely hard and highly resistent to heat. It has a hob, grill plate, oven, microwave, dishwasher, 2 sinks and a work surface rubbish bin. There is also a huge amount of storage space.

The stairs have also been installed. They come from a company in Barcelona that is called Servitja. They are made of steel and will have wooden steps. The bannisters were also manufactured by the same company. They look fantastic!! They also weigh a ton!!

Granero del Burro update

Granero del Burro

Granero del Burro will be finally opening its doors to customers in the Autumn of this year. It is somewhat later than hoped, but it will be a fantastic place to spend a self catering holiday near Ribadeo, Galicia, Northern Spain. The roof is finished, as are all the windows, internal walls, ceilings, plumbing and electrics. This week the underfloor heating is being installed.

The kitchen is designed and ordered as is the steel staircase. Both are being fitted at the end of the month. The carpenter still has a lot of work to do internally on the wardrobes, kitchen ceiling and the wooden floors. The plumber still has to install all the sanitaryware. But the end is in sight!

View from the lounge window

The outdoor areas will be worked on during the Summer and and a wonderful outdoor eating area will be created in the old bread oven. The most important fiesta of the year in Galicia - Vidal

Vidal fiesta
On the 20th August, it was the Vidal fiesta. Vidal is in the parish of Trabada and the fiesta takes place next to the church. It is also the village where Granero del Burro is. It is the only time in the year that you can easily walk to a bar and some entertainment!! It is only a tiny fiesta but is well worth going to. A real mixture of ages, from elder people whose families have lived in the area for generations to the children who go to the fiesta with their parents and grandparents.

Vidal fiesta (2)
This year, the orchestra from Ribadeo music college played at lunchtime. It was a baking hot day so everyone gathered under the trees in the churchyard to listen to them. Before they played there was the usual mass and parading of the statues from inside the church. The bar was open and people came for the 'hora de vinos' (hour of the wine!).

Vidal fiesta (3)
After the orchestra had finished playing, the group - American Star played a few songs so people could have a dance. In the evening they started again about 11 o'clock and played well into the early hours so there was plenty of opportunity to dance, have a drink and enjoy yourself. And you can walk back to the barn!!

Update on barn progress

Granero del burro
The creation of the luxury self catering accommodation in North Spain is still going according to plan and there is now a building with a roof on it as well as a first floor. The new roof was completed this week with the addition of four extraction chimneys - for the wood burning stove, kitchen and two bathrooms. The new wall has also been completed and sandblasted to match it with the original wall.

Granero roof

Inside the first floor is complete and you can see where the lounge and bedroom will be. You can compare the actual with the artists impressions here. The final internal plans are being agreed next week and so it is hoped to continue the works at the beginning of June. This then gives enough time to finish the job and prepare for opening in January 2012.

Granero - inside

Spring has arrived at Granero del burro

Primroses at Granero del burro
This weekend the weather was beautiful with temperatures up to 15 degrees, and there were signs of Spring everywhere around Granero del burro. Just below the barn there was a beautiful Firecrest in the hedge as well as the male Cirl Bunting singing his heart out from the top of a bush. There were also a pair of Jays messing around in the trees and our resident Long Tailed Tits were playing around as well.

Cirl Bunting
All the trees have got buds on them, the Cherry trees are out, and there are Catkins and Pussy Willow everywhere. The grass is growing like crazy, the sheep have got their lambs and even the local goat has got a baby kid. The primroses at Granero del burro are all out and due to the good weather, we planted our Sweet Peas at the weekend.

As is often the case, when you think Spring is here, the temperature plummets. Today it is 9 degrees!!
