Agricultural fair in Vegadeo, Asturias 2012

Feria de muestras - Vegadeo 2012
The 'feria de muestras' is an annual event in Vegadeo. This is a medium sized town which sits at the bottom of the Eo estuary on the Asturias/Galicia border. The agricultural fair is combined with the town's musical fiesta, so there are animals and farm machinery during the day, and music and dancing by night.

Feria de muestras - Vegadeo 2012 (10)

It costs €3 to get in and you can wander round lots of farm machinery as well as lots of stalls selling local produce. There are local crafts and home produced food, and the best bit is that all the stalls let you taste their produce. A great appetizer before lunch!! And of course there are plenty of places to eat the usual fayre - Octopus, Chorizo, Criollo sausages, boiled ham, grilled Pork rib and Padron Peppers.

The animals are always a great favourite and this year, in addition to the huge collection of cows and bulls, there were horses with their foals, pigs and piglets and several puppies. Sadly there were no donkeys this year! There is a show parade for the huge bulls with prizes for the best turned out.

Feria de muestras - Vegadeo 2012 (7)

This year the 'feria de muestras' coincided with the flower carpets in Castropol, but this is not always the case as the date for Corpus Christi move each year. Next year Corpus Christi is on the 30th May (Thursday) so the flower carpets will be on the 2nd June. The agricultural fair and fiesta in Vegadeo will be the following week. This will help you plan your stay at Granero del Burro.

Flower carpets in Castropol, Asturias 2012

Flower carpet in Castropol

Sunday 10th of June was the day this year that Spain celebrated Corpus Christi with is beautiful flower carpets. Castropol, a small village on the edge of the Eo estuary, is famous for its flower carpets and people travel from all over Spain to see them. You can see last year's Castropol flower carpets here

Flower carpet

This year the weather wasn't kind. There had been torrential rain overnight and this was made worse by the very strong wind whistling around the tiny streets. Sadly, this meant that some of the carpets were not laid in the street, and the ones that were, had the flower petals blown off them by the wind. There were frantic attempts to replace them and indeed a little lad was doing his best to keep the petals on the floor by watering them!

Castropol is a beautiful little village sitting on the Eastern shore of the Eo estuary opposite Ribadeo. It has tiny streets lined with whitewashed houses, and a little port area with a couple of nice restaurants and a sailing club. It has lovely views across to Figueras and the port area of Ribadeo and is well worth a visit if you are staying in the area.

Property for sale inTrabadela, Galicia - €120,000

House in Trabadela

A fantastic property has just come on the market in Trabadela, Galicia. It is in a fantastic spot next to a beautiful stream, and set in about 9000 square metres of land. There is the house, a barn, an enormous bread oven, a beautiful 'horreo' (grain store) and several outbuilding in various states of repair.

Trabadela stream

The house itself has a ground floor, a first floor, and a second floor in the roof space. It is a huge house of about 150 square metres per floor, so there is well over 400 square metres of possible living space. The rooms have high ceilings which is unusual for Galician properties, and all the rooms have big windows which allow in plenty of light.

Horreo attached to the house

The house would make a fantastic living space with potential for huge wide open spaces. The roof needs replacing but it would be a relatively simple project as the structure is very simple. It would make sense to have the first floor as the main living space with bedrooms in the roof space. The big windows mean it would be a very light house. Of course it would also make a fantastic small hotel.

Typical room in Trabadela house

Outside there is a huge bread oven which could be restored and used as a great outdoor eating space. Alternatively it could become a small and quirky apartment. There is also a barn which could once again be converted into a small apartment or could be somewhere to live permanently.

Bread oven

The large town of Ribadeo is only 20 minutes away and the village of Trabada is only just over 5 minutes away. Here there is a small supermarket and a couple of bars and restaurants. A truly peaceful location but with access to all essential amenities.

Granero del Burro update

Granero del Burro

Granero del Burro will be finally opening its doors to customers in the Autumn of this year. It is somewhat later than hoped, but it will be a fantastic place to spend a self catering holiday near Ribadeo, Galicia, Northern Spain. The roof is finished, as are all the windows, internal walls, ceilings, plumbing and electrics. This week the underfloor heating is being installed.

Lounge

The kitchen is designed and ordered as is the steel staircase. Both are being fitted at the end of the month. The carpenter still has a lot of work to do internally on the wardrobes, kitchen ceiling and the wooden floors. The plumber still has to install all the sanitaryware. But the end is in sight!

View from the lounge window

The outdoor areas will be worked on during the Summer and and a wonderful outdoor eating area will be created in the old bread oven. The booking system has been completed and will be going live next week and there is now a Spanish version of the website here. At long last you will be able to book your holiday in Northern Spain at Granero del Burro. Keep an eye on the blog for more information.

If you are planning a trip to Galicia next year for a self catering holiday, tapas week is during May. Next year it should be at the beginning of May.

New restaurant opens in Ribadeo, Galicia

La Quinta restaurant

A new restaurant has recently opened in Ribadeo and it well worth a visit if you are staying at Granero del Burro, the luxury self catering accommodation in Trabada, Galicia, Northern Spain. It is a 'parilla' (Grill) and is the only one in central Ribadeo. The building that it is in is an old Carpenter's factory and they have retained the old glass ceiling from it.

La Quinta

It is a wonderful airy building that has been restored very sympathetically. It has huge windows looking out over the back streets of Ribadeo, and 2 enormous diagrams on the walls explaining the various cuts of meat of both a pig and a bull. The bar is long and thin with designer graffiti behind it, and is a great place to go for just a drink. The toilets have an interesting feature - a huge copper pot as a sink!

Cuts of meat picture

The food is great with a good selection of both meat and fish. The 'Churrasco' (pork ribs) are a must and the Pulpo a la plancha (grilled Octopus) is fantastic too. The fillet steak is another divine treat! The grill is in the restaurant so you can watch them prepare your meal. The waiters and waitresses are extremely helpful and friendly.

Graffiti behind bar

There is another 'La Quinta' in Foz but the one is Ribadeo must form part of a visit to the town.
