Carnaval 2010 in Ribadeo, Galicia, Spain

Carnaval - 16th February
A lot of things have happended in Spain since the last post in January and one of the most fun was the Carnaval celebration back in mid February. Carnaval is the Spanish equivalent to Mardi Gras and takes place to prior to Lent. The main parades are on Shrove Tuesday and the weekend before.

Ribadeo had its own celebrations and being the party town that it is, there was a real party atmosphere on the Saturday night. Spanish folk celebrate 'Carnaval' by getting dressed up so 75% of all people on the Saturday night were in fancy dress costumes. There were some fantastic ones. The girls here all work in a great bar called Pica.

The hat and the shoe
On Shrove Tuesday there was the main parade through the centre of town with children and adults alike all dressed up. There were money prizes for all sorts of categories of fancy dress and the childrens winners were the 'Hat and the Shoe'. How creative!!
