Granero del Burro is wonderfully situated near the border between Galicia and Asturias and is therefore a great base to explore both provinces and experience 2 different cultures. The Camino de Santiago also passes within a few kilometres of the barn. Below you can find some suggestions of places to visit and things to do and see in both provinces.
Beaches
Barreiros beaches - these are the nearest Galician beaches to Granero del Burro and are a 25 minute drive away
Cathedrals beach - Las Catedrales is the second most visited tourist attraction in Galicia after Santiago de Compostela and is well worth a visit. There is a cafe and restaurant here which are open from Easter to October
Penarronda beach - this is a very popular beach just inside Asturias and is very popular in the Summer months. In the Winter it is a great spot for walking and birdwatching

Interesting places to visit
Trabada - this is the local village with a small supermarket, 2 bar/restaurants, a Post Office and a bank. It is a 5 minute drive away
Ribadeo - this is a large town in Galicia, about a 20 minute drive away. There is a large Eroski supermarket, lots of bars and restaurants, a lively night life at weekends, an interesting port and marina and a beautiful old town.
Vegadeo - this town is just over 10 minutes away and is handy for supplies. It has a market on Saturday mornings. There is an agricultural fair every year called la feria de las muestras
Castropol - this is a beautiful little town on the edge of the Ría de Ribadeo (estuary). There are nice views of Ribadeo and it has some nice places to eat in the little port area. There are famous flower carpets here to celebrate Corpus Christi (June)
Tapia de Casariego - this a nice little port in Asturias. In the port area there are lots of restaurants and bars as well as a lighthouse. There is a natural saltwater swimming pool and a nice circular walk around the rocky coastline.
Taramundi, Mazonovo and Teixois - Taramundi is a beautifully restored small town in Asturias and is famous for it handmade knives! Mazonovo is a wonderfully restored water mill and Teixois is just mystical. They are all next to each other
Los Oscos - these are 3 villages in Asturias. There is San Martin de Oscos, Villanueva de Oscos and Santa Eulalia de Oscos. Santa Eulalia is the prettiest of the three.
Santiago de Compostela - this is the capital of Galicia and is where the 'camino de Santiago' ends. It has a truly impressive cathedral where St. James is buried and a wonderful old city centre. It is 2 hours away.
A Coruña - this is a large city about one a a half hours away. It is a big port and has the beautiful Riazor beach. The torre de Hercules is also well worth a visit
Oviedo - this is the capital of Asturias and is one and a half hours away. The old town is very beautiful and is renowned for its Asturian cider. It is only 25 minutes from Asturias airport
Lugo - this is the provincial capital and is a walled city. You can walk around the entire wall and it has an impressive cathedral
Nice walks
Granero del Burro - there are lots of easy walks that you can do from the front door of Granero del Burro. You can go and visit the local pigs, horses and donkey in their fields!
Figueras to Castropol - this is a lovely walk around the edge of the Ría de Ribadeo. You can have lunch in Castropol to give you the energy for the return walk
Ribadeo to Isla Pancha - this walk snakes around the mouth of the estuary and ends at the beautiful lighthouse on the Isla Pancha
Coastal walk from Foz - this walk takes you from the huge beach in Foz around the coast on a nice boardwalk
Penarronda - there are lots of walks from the car park. You can go right or left!

Mesón Camino Norte - nice restaurant in Trabada
Bar Villapol - restaurant and bar in Trabada
La Flor - nice bar for drinks and tapas in Vegadeo
La Quinta - a relatively new restaurant in Ribadeo. Great grilled food
La Solana - a great restaurant in the port area of Ribadeo
Casa Villaronta - this small restaurant in Ribadeo is famous for its Octopus. A must try!!
La Botellería - an interesting restaurant in Ribadeo with different food. The owner speaks English!
Hotel Bouza - a nice bar for a coffee in Ribadeo. You can do the Spanish lottery here as well
Rinlo - there are 4 restaurants in Rinlo. All of them are worth trying
Marisquería Risón - a great little place in the port of Castropol
Casa Jano - a great restaurant in Pianton, about 15 minutes from Granero del Burro
La Yenka - fantastic sea views from the restaurant. Next to Catedrales beach
El Pósito - beautiful restaurant on the port side in Figueras. Have a look at the shipyard at the same time!!
El Pajar - a nice relaxing restaurant next to Top Golf Course
Activites
Camino de Santiago - the Way of St. James (Northern route) passes through Trabada
Boat hire - from La Flote in the port in Ribadeo. No experience needed
Boat trips from Ribadeo - boat trips around the estuary stopping at Figueras and Castropol
Train rides - the Feve (narrow guage railway) snakes its way along the northern coast
Horse riding - available near Tapia de Casariego
Go Karting - a nice circuit in la Roda
Canoeing - available in the Summer from San Tirso de Abres (15 minutes)
Surfing - there is a surf school in the Summer at Penarronda beach
Golf - there is a nice 9 hole course at Tol, Asturias. It has a driving range too. There is also a very good 14 hole course at Rapalcuarto near Tapia de Casariego.
